Gerald Barry - Denies murder of Manuela Riedo

A man accused of murdering a Swiss teenager in October 2007 has told the Central Criminal Court that her death was an accident and that he did not mean to cause her any harm.

Manuela Riedo, 17, was found dead in an area of wasteland close to the Lough Atalia area of Galway city on 8 October 2007.

29-year-old Gerald Barry, of Rosan Glas in Rahoon in Galway, told the jury that he met Ms Riedo on the night of her death.

In his evidence to the court, Mr Barry said he had sex with Ms Riedo.

He said that after they had sex, he grabbed Ms Riedo and asked her to spend some more time with him.

However, he said that when she failed to respond to his next piece of conversation, he shook her and there was no response.

Under cross-examination the 29-year-old said he did not attack or threaten Ms Riedo.

Mr Barry admitted stealing the dead woman's phone and camera.

He told the court that he later sold the phone because he wanted money for drink.

Gerald Barry denies the murder.

The trial is expected to conclude tomorrow.
