A 25-year-old man who was caught with 1kg of cocaine has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

Daniel Goulding, from Whitechapel Grove, in Clonsilla in Dublin was arrested after he threw the drugs from a car before stopping at a garda checkpoint on 15 June 2006.

A man in a car behind him witnessed the incident and told gardaí, who found the drugs in a ditch.

Judge Desmond Hogan today praised the man for his civic mindedness and sense of duty.

Goulding who pleaded not guilty and refused to co-operate with gardaí has 30 previous convictions.

Judge Hogan said the minimum he could sentence Goulding to was ten years in prison.
