Gerald Barry - Denies murder of Swiss teenager

The trial of a man accused of murdering Swiss teenager Manuela Riedo has heard that calls from his mobile phone were routed through a cell in the Lough Atalia area on the night of the alleged murder.

28-year-old Gerald Barry of Rosan Glas, Rahoon in Galway, denies the murder of 17-year-old Manuela Riedo but admits stealing a camera and a phone on 8 October 2007.

Yesterday, the court was told Ms Riedo's body was found naked from the waist down, partially covered with her coat, which was secured by a rock on waste ground near Lough Atalia in the Renmore area of Galway.

Today, the court heard that analysis of mobile phone calls from the accused man's phone show some were routed through a cell at Lough Atalia and Renmore areas.

Earlier the court heard that Mr Barry had told gardaí he was nowhere near the area on that night.

In initial conversations with gardaí, Mr Barry said he spent the afternoon and evening of 8 October with his brother and brother-in-law and did not go near the city centre or the railway line that night.

In a statement to gardaí, he said he had not been near the area where the body was found for years and had been in the company of his brother from between 3pm and 4pm on the day of the alleged murder, and then went to Salthill before going to his brother-in-law's house that evening.

The accused man's brother, Kevin Barry, and his brother-in-law Denis Ward both gave evidence this morning to confirm Gerald Barry had spent the evening with him.

Mr Ward said he collected him at 8pm at the bottom of Shop Street.

The trial continues.
