A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after he was convicted of double manslaughter following a road crash in Co Louth.

John Woods from Upper Fathom Road, Killeavy in Co Armagh, had been driving a BMW SUV in the early hours of 5 February 2005 in Dundalk.

He crashed at such speed that the four-tonne vehicle became airborne and landed on top of a Hyundai car killing its passenger, Eamon Curran.

The defendant's best friend, Kevin O'Malley, who was a passenger in the BMW was also killed in the crash.

Today at Trim Circuit Criminal Court, Mr Curran's widow, Olive, said justice had been served but there were no winners.

She urged all road users to drive carefully to reduce the number of people dying on our roads.
