Dublin Bus drivers staged a two-hour protest outside the Green Party Head office in Suffolk Street in Dublin this morning.

The action, which began at 11am, was not expected to disrupt bus services.

The demonstration was held to highlight what organisers say is the Green Party's silence over the removal of over 300 buses from the fleets of Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann.

About 40 Dublin Bus drivers were part of the unofficial protest, bringing attention to what they said is the hypocrisy of Green Government ministers in allowing cutbacks in the number of buses.

A spokesperson for the drivers, Owen McCormack, says the party's silence contradicts its election promises on transport.

Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan reacted by saying that the interests of passengers are not being represented at the moment. He said that the Green Party will insist on service reform rather than cutbacks.

The key elements, Minister Ryan said, are that service is quick, fast and frequent. This is the only way to protect and provide jobs in the current difficulties, he concluded.
