Flooding is causing problems in a number of parts of the country this evening.

The counties affected are Cork, Tipperary, Kilkenny, Cavan, Offaly, Westmeath and Galway.

Gardaí have advised motorists to drive with extra care.

One of the worst affected is areas is in Co Tipperary, where the River Suir has burst its banks and the quays are closed in Clonmel.

Gardaí are asking all motorists to avoid the town completely as many parts of the town are impassable. Diversions are in place.

In Northern Ireland, two stages of the World Rally Championship due to take place in Murley and Fardross in counties Tyrone and Fermanagh tonight have been cancelled due to flooding.

Met Éireann says that this evening and tonight will be cloudy and wet with spells of heavy rain in many areas and a continuing risk of localised flooding, especially in the south of the country.

Flood warning line launched in NI

Meanwhile, a new flooding incident line was launched today in Northern Ireland ahead of warnings of heavy rain.

The single point of contact will be available 24-hours a day year round.

Parts of Fermanagh and Tyrone are expected to suffer a deluge of up to 50mm today and drivers have been warned by the Met Office to take care.

Tom Kennedy, programme director for the flood line, said: 'This new single number, 0300 2000 100, is a positive step forward and will provide the public with one point of contact to report that their property is flooded or flooding.'
