The UN Security Council has unanimously approved a stronger mandate for peacekeeping troops in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The resolution gives peacekeepers the authority to protect civilians from violence by rebel groups and also renegade Congolese government soldiers.

British ambassador to the UN Sir John Sawers said the peace-keeping force, MONUC, had to do more to curb widespread violence in the east of the country.
