Since the introduction of fuel surcharges, the airline had adjusted the surcharge level in line with movements in fuel prices.

In a statement Aer Lingus said that today's decision was taken in the context of reductions in fuel prices over a sustained period.

It also said customers who have already booked flights and paid a fuel surcharge will not be refunded as a result of today's decision.

Aer Lingus Chief Executive Dermot Mannion said: 'Now that oil prices have fallen and stabilised over the past number of months, we believe the right thing to do is to remove these surcharges altogether.'
