A jury in the trial of Independent Galway councillor Michael Fahy have retired to an hotel for the night.

Mr Fahy has pleaded not guilty to five charges of fraud and false accounting in relation to the erection of fencing on his private land.

The incident occurred during a road widening scheme approved by Galway County Council.

The court heard that Councillor Fahy repaid the council more than €7,000 and donated €3,000 to charity before the matter was eventually referred to gardaí.
