Migrant workers believe their qualifications are meaningless in Ireland, according a new report on the education needs of migrants.

The report found that potential students face barriers including language difficulties, lack of information on college courses and expensive fees.

The research was funded under the Government’s Strategic Innovation Fund.

It was carried out by Cork, Sligo, Dublin, Athlone, Letterkenny, Galway-Mayo and Dundalk institutes of technology and University College Cork.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the Department of Education is set to publish new guidelines on enrolment policies, amid concerns that some schools are excluding foreign national students.

Dr John Pender from the Institute of Technology Sligo says migrants often feel they cannot fulfil their true potential here.
