A Belfast man has been jailed for life at the Special Criminal Court for shooting and killing a father of five children last year.

Gerard Mackin was found guilty of the murder of taxi driver Edward Burns and the attempted murder of Damien O'Neill at Bog Meadow the Falls Road on 12 March 2007.

Mackin shot Mr Burns in the back of the head after he got out of bed at 2am to pick him up.

Mackin had been drinking all evening with Mr O'Neill, who witnessed the murder and survived even though Mackin subsequently shot him in the neck.

Mr O'Neill gave evidence against Mackin, who fled to Dublin after the killing and opted for trial here.

He is the first person to be convicted in the Republic of Ireland of a murder committed in Northern Ireland.

Afterwards the Burn family, who were in court and clapped and cried following the verdict, said that 'Mackin did not just murder our Eddy, he killed a part of every one of us too'.

They thanked the gardaí and the PSNI and everyone involved in the case for helping them get justice.
