A suspect device discovered outside a home in Northern Ireland was a pipe bomb, police said today.

The object was found near to houses in the village of Coagh, Co Tyrone, around 10.45pm last night.

A number of people were evacuated from properties in the area while Army technical officers made the device safe.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes just before 8am.

Police said they are examining a number of local lines of inquiry and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Meanwhile, police officers in Strabane were attacked by a group of youths last night.

The officers were on routine patrol when they were targeted shortly before 9pm.

As well as two petrol bombs, stones and other missiles were thrown.

No officers were injured but two police vehicles were damaged.

The PSNI has appealed for witnesses to come forward.
