Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy has said that all the resources of the gardaí, including witness protection, are being made available to the investigation of the murder of Shane Geoghegan.

Commissioner Murphy has briefed the Taoiseach on the progress of the investigation and is on his way to Limerick to meet senior officers.

Mr Murphy also expressed his sympathy to the Geoghegan family on the murder and reiterated his commitment to policing in the Limerick area.

More than 50 gardaí, including specialist detectives from the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, are working on the murder investigation.

Detectives believe up to three men were involved in the attack and that they were all from a well-known criminal gang in Limerick.

A post mortem has established that the 28-year-old died after being shot a number of times.

Speaking on RTÉ News At One, the Fine Gael spokesman on Justice, Equality & Law Reform, Charlie Flanagan, said his party has sought an emergency Dáil debate on the murder.

He said the Dáil should debate all options - including internment - to tackle armed criminal gangs.

Mr Flanagan called for relentless policing in Limerick, and increase in the use of surveillance technology and for witness protection to be put on a statutory basis, with increased funding.

Call for dedicated unit

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland, Mayor of Limerick Cllr John Gilligan said the people of the city wanted a dedicated unit to tackle feuding gangs.

A private family wake is being held throughout today for Shane Geoghegan in advance of his funeral tomorrow morning in Limerick city.

It is understood team mates from the Garryowen thirds, of which Shane was captain, as well as other club members were among those who visited the house to express their sympathy to Shane's mother Mary, his father Tom, and his brother Anthony, and girlfriend Jenna.

Meanwhile thousands of messages of support have been posted on a special web page created by the Limerick Leader newspaper, which invited people to light a candle for Shane and to express their messages of sympathy and solidarity.

A spokesperson for the Garryowen Rugby club who has been in contact with the family has said they have been deeply heartened and helped in their grief by the huge amount of support they have received from club members, and from the wider public, not just in Limerick but throughout the country.

Mr Geoghegan's body will be taken to St Joseph's church tomorrow morning for his funeral Mass.

His friends and team mates will form a guard of honour at the church and later at Mungret Cemetery.

Garryowen will also have a special Mass at their club house in Dooradoyle on Friday evening, so that his club mates and friends can attend.
