Garda - Two men to be sentenced

Two men who attacked gardai as they tried to arrest a teenager in Cabra in Dublin will be sentenced later this month.

Paul and Carl Cullen, who are cousins, confronted gardaí as they tried to arrest a youth on Fassaugh Avenue on 20 November 2007.

Garda Amanda Lynch, Garda Daniel Sweeney and student Garda Zihao Weng were beaten and kicked after the two men approached them 'in an aggressive manner.'

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Garda Lynch drew her extendable baton but Paul Cullen, a 21-year-old convicted drug dealer, hit her on the head, took the baton, beat her with it and kicked her in the stomach.

When Garda Lynch was able to get up she saw student Garda Weng being kicked by Carl Cullen, who also had a knuckle duster.

When she was attacked again with the baton she got into the car and locked the door until reinforcements arrived.

Both men were subsequently arrested after armed gardaí arrived.

Garda Lynch was detained in hospital for 17 hours and suffered spleen, facial and back injuries and blurred vision.

The court was told that Carl Cullen has 14 previous convictions and Paul has 11 previous convictions.
