Bin charge increase unlikely, says Gormley

Recycling - Global prices drop
Recycling - Global prices drop

Minister for the Environment John Gormley says he does not think bin charges will be increased as a result of a collapse in the global price for recycled goods.

Waste collection companies have warned that they need urgent government help to store hundreds of thousands of tonnes of recycled waste, which is no longer being exported.

The global price for recycled material has plummeted by as much as 75%.

Mr Gormley said he was setting up an action group involving key stakeholders to look at export markets and storage facilities.

He also said the issue of costs was a matter for local authorities and private companies.
