A 19-year-old man who pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving has been given a two-year suspended prison sentence.

He was also disqualified from driving for six years.

Colm Mee from Oran, Co Roscommon, was the driver of a yellow Honda Civic that crashed at a speed of almost 150km/h, claiming the lives of two of Mr Mee's best friends, including his first cousin.

The accident occurred at 2am on 28 September last year at Bohergarve on the Boyle Road near Roscommon town.

Padraic McHugh, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene while Kieran Kelly, also 17, was pronounced dead on arrival at Roscommon County Hospital.

The front seat passenger, 18-year-old Paul O'Grady, was hospitalised after the accident.

Roscommon Circuit Court heard that the car spun out of control on a bend on the left-hand side of the road, crashed through a stone wall, a fence, subsequently became airborne and came to rest 58m after the car had first lost control.

Garda examinations revealed that the car had been travelling at 149.11km/h at the time of impact. However gardaí said that there was a 10% margin of error.

In his sentencing, Judge Anthony Kennedy said that the car had been travelling at an outrageous speed and that this was the determining cause of the accident.

The four friends had been travelling home from a night out in Sligo when the accident took place.

Judge Anthony Kennedy said that he accepted Mr Mee's unblemished character and felt that the defendant was truly remorseful for what had happened.

In a statement given to the gardaí after his arrest, Mr Mee said that he remembered the drive back from Sligo, but had no recollection of the accident.
