Major flooding affecting Co Kerry

There has been major flooding throughout Killarney and Kenmare in Co Kerry.

Kenmare town is heavily flooded and all access to the town is blocked.

Power has been restored to all customers in Kenmare just before 8pm this evening.

The roads into Killarney are also flooded with the Killarney-Kenmare Road is impassable.

There is also extremely heavy surface water throughout Killarney.

Gardaí are advising motorists to avoid the town completely.

Meanwhile, 450 customers were without power in the Erris area of north Mayo after high winds damaged the main power line in the area.

However, the majority of customers in Erris had their power restored at around 8pm.

Met Éireann says it expects extremely windy and wet weather for the duration, with strong to gale force southwest winds giving gusts to 60 knots or 110km/h.

Heavy rain will affect the areas with total amounts of 25-40mm possible.

AA Roadwatch has advised motorists to drive with caution and allow extra time for all journeys.

It says they should be prepared for heavy rain and poor visibility and expect potential fallen debris and strong gusts of wind.
