A 64-year-old Dublin man who raped a young girl over a five-year period has been jailed for 12 years at the Central Criminal Court.

The girl was aged between seven and 12 when the rapes took place.

Anthony Daly of Woodlands Road in Dún Laoghaire pleaded guilty to three sample counts of rape and one of sexual assault.

Mr Justice Barry White said he could not think of a more serious sexual offence to have committed and described it as an appalling breach of trust on a child of tender years.

The judge said the offences had continued regularly and the man had only pleaded guilty at the 11th hour.

Judge White said the appropriate sentence was 15 years but suspended the last three on condition that the man remains under the supervision of the probation services.

He will also be registered as a sex offender.
