Trinity College Dublin has become the first Irish college to be included in The Times' top 50 world universities.
It has been ranked 49th in the world on the newspaper’s Higher Education-QS League Tables.
This is the highest ranking the College has ever achieved, up four places on last year's ranking of 53.
Commenting on the significance of the achievement, TCD Provost, Dr John Hegarty said that when the university produced its first Strategic Plan in 2003 it was the ambition to enter the top 50 grouping.
He said that it is very satisfying that within a few short years TCD achieved that goal.
Dr Hegarty added that he believes it is absolutely critical for Ireland, especially in this knowledge driven age, to have more universities in the front rank.
