A survivor of a car crash in which three young men died has told an inquest into their deaths about the circumstances of the accident.

Killian O'Sullivan was one of two young men to survive the incident in which 17-year-old Fintan O'Driscoll, 20-year-old Shane Kelly and 21-year-old Colm Harrington lost their lives.

He told the coroner's court in Bantry today how they had gone for a spin in Shane Kelly's Ford Fiesta car in the grounds of Dunboy Castle.

He recalled how they were egging Shane on as he did seven handbrake turns.

He recalled the moments before they ended up in the water - the car skidding across the grass, rocking about three times on the water's edge and flipping over into 60cm of water.

He and a second young man, Greg Harrington, managed to escape but the others all drowned.

A solicitor on behalf of two of the victims, Mr Kelly and Mr O'Driscoll, applied to have the case adjourned.

Michael Quinlin indicated that an investigation on behalf of the families is ongoing and he may have some evidence that might present a different scenario as to what happened on the night.

The case has been adjourned until 1 December.

Coroner Frank O'Connell extended his deepest sympathies to all families of the three victims.

He said it was an extraordinary situation that occurred when five young men went into the water, two were lucky to escape and three were not so lucky and died as a result.
