Developer Owen O'Callaghan has told the Mahon Tribunal that he may have told Tom Gilmartin about donations to Fianna Fáil.

He said this may have been the basis of ‘horrendous’ allegations against senior politicians including Bertie Ahern.

Mr O'Callaghan said he was one of ten people that then Taoiseach Albert Reynolds and Minister for Finance Bertie Ahern asked in 1993 to contribute £100,000 each towards the Fianna Fáil debt.

Mr O'Callaghan said he helped to organise a fund-raising dinner in Cork, attended by Albert Reynolds in March 1994, where he contributed £10,000 of £50,000 collected.

Patricia Dillon SC for the tribunal said Mr Gilmartin had told the tribunal that Mr O'Callaghan had told him of giving Mr Reynolds £150,000 in his bedroom before he was picked up helicopter for a St Patrick's Day trip.

Mr O'Callaghan conceded he may have told Mr Gilmartin about the Cork dinner.

After making another political donation, he had £80,000 left to give to Fianna Fáil in 1994 and said this may have been the origin of Mr Gilmartin's allegations of money paid to Mr Ahern or Mr Reynolds.

However, Mr O'Callaghan said Mr Gilmartin's allegations were so far from the truth that they were figments of his imagination, or that he was coached by journalist Frank Connolly.
