Shannon Airport - Small plane bounced on runway
Shannon Airport - Small plane bounced on runway

The Air Accident Investigation Unit has published a report into an incident at Shannon Airport last April where a light aircraft careered off the runway.

The AAIU report has concluded that the student pilot lost directional control of the plane.

The Cessna 172 bounced a number of times while landing on a runway at 4.32pm on 26 April. The plane veered left off the runway coming to a stop in the grass area about 30m from the runway.

The report stated that the student pilot had carried out three normal touch-and-go procedures but on the fourth landing, the aircraft ‘bounced a few times and he lost directional control.’

Airport Fire Services were quickly on the scene, however there was no fire, no injury to the 22-year-old student pilot and, apparently, no damage to the aircraft.

As a result of the incident a number of incoming flights were put into the holding pattern by ATC and their landings delayed however normal operations resumed at 5.52pm.
