Barry George has been cleared of the murder of television presenter Jill Dando.

The 48-year-old was cleared at the Old Bailey in London after his second trial and two appeals.

Mr George was originally found guilty of murder in 2001.

Speaking outside the court after the verdict Barry George's solicitor Jeremy Moore said Mr George is overwhelmed and relieved about the verdict.

Mr Moore said however, that it is not a time to celebrate.

'Barry George, an innocent man, has spent eight years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

'Those eight years could have been better served by the police in searching for the real killer, he added.

Mr Moore said that Mr George's first words on being cleared were: 'I can't believe it.'

He added: 'We are obviously delighted with the outcome today that we feel is the only sensible verdict that the jury could have made on the evidence before them.'

Speaking outside the Old Bailey, Barry George's sister Michelle Diskin said she hoped that the police would look again at the murder of Jill Dando.

Michelle Diskin had travelled from her home in Ballincollig, Co Cork to London for today's verdict.

Mr George's first appeal was rejected but a second appeal, in November last year, resulted in the conviction being quashed and a retrial ordered.

The second trial began on 9 June this year, with the judge ruling out evidence that a single particle of firearms discharge residue was found in the pocket of Mr George's coat.

Commander Simon Foy, head of Scotland Yard's homicide and serious crime, said he was disappointed by the verdict.

He said he is especially disappointed for Ms Dando's family and friends.

However, he said he respects the decision of the court.

He said that the investigation into Ms Dando’s murder was complex, thorough and professional with more than 2,500 statements taken and 3,700 exhibits recovered.

He added that it would not be appropriate to comment any further at this time, except to say that Scotland Yard will be reflecting on today's verdict and considering how best to proceed.
