Indonesia - Two earthquakes hit

Earthquakes measuring 5.9 and 5.6 on the Richter scale have hit Indonesia. There was no tsunami risk or reports of damage.

The epicentre of the 5.9 quake was 10km deep, 135km southeast of Wonogiri district in Yogyakarta province.

The ancient royal city of Yogyakarta was devastated by an earthquake that killed more than 5,700 people in May 2006.

Another quake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale earlier struck Indonesia's northern Sumatra island. That hit at a depth of 10km, 155km northwest of Tanah Bala in north Sumatra.

Indonesia suffers from frequent earthquakes as it lies in the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire', an area of intense seismic activity where a number of tectonic plates collide.
