Charlie Flanagan - Criticises Govt's stance on crime

Fine Gael justice spokesman Charlie Flanagan has called for 'non-stop monitoring' of gang-linked criminals and longer prison sentences.

In a statement, he said two recent murders showed that gang members still had the ability to target and assassinate their victims with relative ease.

He also criticised the Government, saying it was preparing to roll back on garda overtime, which will have a direct impact on key measures.

'This second savage attack in 24 hours harks back to last year, which was the bloodiest on record for gangland killings and firearms murders,' Mr Flanagan said.

'These two murders, back to back, show that gangland members still have the ability to target and assassinate their victims with relative ease.

'Yet the Government is preparing to roll back on garda overtime, which will have a direct impact on key Garda gangland measures like Operation Anvil,' he added.

Fine Gael is also calling for a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years to send out a clear message that murders will be punished.
