The Garda Commissioner has said that gardaí are now in a position to consider requests for assistance from a French judge who is investigating the unsolved murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier.
The statement comes after confirmation that the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided not to bring any charges relating to complaints made in 2005 by a witness about the original Garda investigation.
In 2005 a woman from Co Cork who had been interviewed as part of the investigation into the murder of Ms du Plantier 10 years previously complained about the conduct of gardaí, and retracted her original statements.
Assistant Commioner Ray McAndrew led a team of officers who investigated her complaints and a file was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
But it has now been confirmed that the DPP has decided no charges should be brought against any officer.
And the Garda Commissioner has said he has consulted with the Attorney General and the Minister for Justice and that the force can now consider request for assistance from French authorities who are also investigating the murder.
Less than two weeks ago the body of Sophie Toscan du Plantier was exhumed in France at the request of a French judge, who has already sought access to the Garda investigation file.
