Lawyers for a man charged with conspiracy to murder have told the Central Criminal Court that was dragged along in the State's quest to get Sharon Collins.
45-year-old Ms Collins of Kildysart Road, Ennis, and Essam Eid, a Las Vegas poker dealer, deny conspiring to murder PJ Howard and his two sons Robert and Niall in August and September 2006.
In his closing address, David Sutton SC told the jury there were doubts about the identification evidence of Mr Eid and the State had failed to prove that he was the same person as Tony Luciano, the hitman for hire.
However he said even if they believed this they could not find that there was a conspiracy to murder, only a conspiracy to defraud.
Mr Sutton said: 'This was not dial M for murder, it was dial M for money.'
He said the bulk of the State's case was against Ms Collins and Mr Eid had been dragged along in its wake.
Mr Sutton said the State's main witness Teresa Engle was a liar and a fraudster who had been convicted of an almost identical case in the US, using the same hitman website.
He described her as a self-serving perjurer and an accomplice whose evidence must be treated with caution.
