A father who raped his daughters when they were four and five years old has been sentenced to 11 years in prison at the Central Criminal Court.
Mr Justice Paul Carney was told that the 61-year-old defendant is already serving a sentence for indecently assaulting three sisters from another family.
The two victims approached gardaí and made complaints that their father had abused them in their home between 1980 and 1985.
The court, sitting in Dundalk, was told that the defendant, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his victims, admitted the rapes when questioned by the gardaí, and blamed alcohol.
In court he pleaded guilty to six charges of rape and indecent assault.
Both women read out their victim impact statements to the court, explaining the devastating effects the abuse had on them.
In passing sentence, Mr Justice Carney said he had to take into account the gravity of the offences, the age and impact the rapes had on the victims, as well as the multiplicity of offences.
However, by law he also had to take into account mitigating factors such as the defendant's guilty plea and his early admission.
He sentenced the defendant to 11 years in prison and refused leave to appeal.
