A man who raped his daughter at the Co Meath family home has been given a ten-year prison sentence at the Central Criminal Court.

The 45-year-old married man had yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of raping his then 20-year-old daughter in July 2006.

Today Judge Carney, sitting in Dundalk, imposed a ten-year sentence and ordered he receive a further ten-year post release supervision.

Judge Carney also ordered that he be placed on the sex offenders register.

Yesterday, the court heard from Garda Eugene Fleming that the rape had occurred after the victim had gone to bed having consumed a lot of alcohol at a party.

Her father had come into the bedroom on several occasions with a basin before raping her.

In her victim impact statement, the woman said she found it difficult to state the impact of her ordeal.

At one stage, she said she was ready to give up, but could not leave her family to deal with all the pain.

However, the situation had now improved, she said, and she was feeling much better about herself.

Paul Burns, counsel for the defendant, said his client was a binge drinker and accepted he had failed as a father and husband.

He expressed his remorse for what he had done but hoped that sometime in the future there could be some form of contact between him and his family.
