22% of women who contacted Women's Aid last year were still suffering abuse from an ex-partner or spouse, despite leaving the abusive relationship.

The abuse included being followed, threatened, driven off the road, or being physically or sexually assaulted.

Women's Aid says the number of women contacting it remains alarmingly consistent from year to year.

Figures show almost 12,000 calls were made to its helpline last year.

Emotional abuse accounted for the greatest number of calls, with women reporting threats to kill them, or to hurt or kill their children, or not being spoken to for weeks.

There were almost 2,500 incidents of physical abuse including women being tied up and locked in a room for days or having boiling water thrown at them.

Women also reported being denied access to money and being sexually abused.
