A 37-year-old man is being held in Monaghan following a serious sexual assault on an 86-year-old woman in the town.
The man was arrested yesterday by gardaí investigating the attack that began on Sunday night.
It is believed a man forced his way into the home of the elderly woman and subjected her to a series of assaults over several hours.
He eventually left the house yesterday morning.
A man was later arrested by gardaí and brought to Monaghan Garda Station where he is still being questioned.
Garda forensic teams have already examined the victim’s home while interviews with neighbours and witnesses are taking place.
The elderly woman is said to be deeply traumatised by the attack.
