A 60-year-old former doctor based in Clare is on trial at the Circuit Criminal Court in Kilrush charged with deception and defrauding terminally ill patients.
Paschal Carmody from Killaloe is pleading not guilty to 25 charges.
The trial will hear evidence from more than 90 State witnesses in relation to six cancer patients who were treated by Paschal Carmody and who have since died.
The charges against the former doctor include intent to defraud by obtaining monies from individuals ranging from €100 to €20,000, between 2001 and 2002.
According to the charges monies obtained totalled almost €40,000, which was for falsely pretending that their cancer would be cured by undergoing photodynamic therapy.
A jury of seven men and five women has been sworn in this lunchtime and the trial is expected to last for up to four weeks.
