A pilot project designed to help transport cancer patients to centres for treatment has been launched by the Irish Cancer Society.
Under the Care to Drive initiative, more than 100 volunteers will drive patients from south Dublin, Wicklow and north Wexford to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin for treatment.
The pilot scheme is modelled on a similar initiative in Canada.
The National Director of Cancer Control, Professor Tom Keane, said that the programme would remove some of the barriers patients face when trying to access the best possible care for the best possible outcomes.
The society hopes to roll out the project to other areas around the country from next year.
