Gardaí say they will not be specifically targeting learner drivers during an enforcement operation beginning tomorrow.

Chief Superintendent Declan McCoburn of the Garda Traffic Corps said the purpose of Operation Safeguard was to target a range of offences including drivers on a provisional licences driving unaccompanied.

There had been speculation that the focus of the six-day operation would be drivers on provisional licences.

Other offences to be targeted include not having a driving licence.

Vehicle insurance, road tax, NCT, tyres and registration plates will be checked as well as the use of seat belts and child restraints, driving while using a mobile phone and while intoxicated.
