A Supreme Court judge has called for an urgent review of security after a man threw a glass decanter at the wall of the court during a sentence appeal hearing.
The ourburst came in the Court of Criminal Appeal from a relative of a 28 year old woman killed by a dangerous driver in 2006.
Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns called for the security review saying he could not tolerate behaviour, which could endanger court staff and witnesses and throw into question the proper functioning of the court.
The incident happened after a man who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of a 28-year-old woman had his suspended sentence changed to one of community service.
The original trial heard that the 24-year-old man was travelling at twice the legal speed limit at the time of the accident at Mount Seskin Road, Brittas in April 2006.
He originally received a three-year suspended sentence, was banned from driving and fined €2,500.
The DPP appealed the leniency of the sentence.
Today the suspended sentence was changed to 120 hours community service.
After the sentence was changed a relative of the dead woman then climbed over court benches and stood on a table close to the top of the court before throwing a glass decanter in the direction of the accused.
The man was arrested and taken to the Bridewell Garda station.
The Court of Criminal Appeal heard he is expected to be charged with criminal damage and may face other charges.
