Gardaí have appealed for anyone who witnessed a fatal car crash on the Cavan by pass this morning to come forward.

A 48-year-old woman died after her car collided with another, about 3km north of Cavan town, at around 8.45am this morning.

Two women, who were travelling in the second car, were taken to Cavan General Hospital with serious injuries.

Anyone who was travelling on the Cavan by pass between 8.30am and 8.50am is asked to contact gardaí at 049 - 4368800.

Meanwhile, a six-year-old boy is in a critical but stable condition in Beaumont Hospital in Dublin following a road crash in Co Clare yesterday.

The boy's mother also sustained serious injuries in the two-car collision.

The crash happened on the Ballyvaughan road near the village of
Bellharbour.

The boy was taken to hospital in Galway, but has since been transferred to the Dublin hospital.
