Mark Green - Will be sentenced tomorrow

A 20-year-old Dublin man convicted of the manslaughter of his friend at Ringsend in March last year will be sentenced tomorrow.

Mark Green of Tritonville Road, Sandymount, was acquitted on a murder charge but found guilty of the manslaughter of 19-year-old Alan Young.

Mr Young died from a single stab wound inflicted during an altercation between the two men.

Alan Young's family gave victim impact statements at the Central Criminal Court today.

The family said they were destroyed by his death and felt not only grief but anger.

The statements described how the 19-year-old had started his first job just six months before his death.

While at school he had been elected to the student council and was a talented footballer.

His family described Alan as a hard working, happy, young man who lived for football.

The family also said Mr Young and Green had been friends for three years and not life-long friends as had been portrayed during the trial.

In his submission to the sentence hearing, defence counsel Brendan Grehan told the court the offence fell on the side of involuntary manslaughter as there was no evidence of intent.

He said the remorse felt by Green was palpable in video recordings of his interviews with gardaí.

The trial heard that Green had waved a knife at Mr Young as he came towards him, resulting in a single fatal stab wound to his heart.

He immediately admitted his involvement in the killing to gardaí.
