Campaigners for the retention of breast cancer services in Sligo have vowed to continue their campaign following last night's Dáil defeat.

Lily McMorrow said they were now more determined than ever to fight on for the services in Sligo.

She said that local Fianna Fáil-elected representatives had let them down badly last night by voting with the Government.

Ms McMorrow added that she did not know how they could hold their heads up high when they go back to Sligo.

Killian McLaughlin said the campaigners who were in the Dáil last night were not surprised but were definitely disappointed by the actions of the TDs.

However, he said they would not stop their campaign to retain and improve cancer services in Sligo.

The Government won last night's Dáil vote on cancer services in the northwest by 75 to 62.

All the Government deputies from the region supported the policy of Health Minister Mary Harney.

The debate saw an impassioned appeal from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny to the Fianna Fáil TDs from Mayo and Sligo to vote with the Opposition to support the retention of cancer services in the two counties.
