Robert McCartney - Trial over Belfast killing

The trial has begun in Belfast of a man accused of murdering Robert McCartney outside a bar in the city centre three years ago.

Terry Davison, 51, is charged with murdering Mr McCartney and two others are accused of causing an affray.

Opening the trial, a prosecution lawyer said Robert McCartney, a 33-year-old father of two young sons, was stabbed to death after a row started inside Magennis's bar in Belfast city centre in January 2005.

It was alleged the fight started after Mr McCartney made a rude gesture towards a couple of women in the pub, one of whom was the partner of the man accused of the murder.

The lawyer said that evidence would show that after initially taking part in the attack on Mr McCartney along with a number of other men, Mr Davison pursued the injured and bleeding man down a nearby street before stabbing him in the abdomen.

The court also heard that an eyewitness known as witness C would give evidence of seeing Mr Davison attacking and killing Mr McCartney.

The trial is expected to last for at least four weeks.
