Under the new provision people over the age of 65 may serve on a jury if they wish to, but they may also be excused if they choose.

Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform Dermot Ahern said older people are playing an active part for longer in Irish society

Mr Ahern said that older people are good judges of their own capacity and the measure is not intended to pressurise people over 65 to serve on juries.
