A schoolgirl has appeared in court accused of murdering West Belfast greengrocer Harry Holland last September.

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named because of her age, was released on bail following a brief hearing at Belfast Youth Court.

Mr Holland, 65, was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver near his home at Norfolk Drive.

The girl, who was previously accused of causing an affray and assaulting Mr Holland, spoke only to confirm she understood the new charge now against her.

She sat alongside her father in the courtroom, just a few feet away from two of the victim's sisters.

A PSNI detective sergeant told the court he believed he could connect the teenager to the murder charge.

A defence solicitor asked the detective whether it was still the police view that the accused did not assault Mr Holland with a screwdriver. The officer confirmed this was the case.

That view has not changed since the more serious allegation was made against the teenager, the court heard.

The girl was remanded on bail to appear again on 21 May.

A 16-year-old boy previously appeared in court charged with Mr Holland's murder, while another 17-year-old youth has been accused of affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
