A juror in the trial of former Assistant Dublin City and County Manager George Redmond on corruption charges has been discharged.

The juror disclosed to the court this morning that he had discovered his father was related to the wife of a man who had a connection with Mr Redmond in the past.

The trial is continuing with 11 jurors after the foreman assured Judge Joseph Matthews that they had not been affected by anything said by the discharged juror in open court, or in discussions with him.

The foreman told the judge all 11 jurors believed they could continue to consider the evidence in the case fairly and impartially.

Judge Matthews reminded them that they may have heard or read or seen media coverage relating to the matters Mr Redmond is charged with.

But he said he wanted to underline to them that an accused person is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty by a jury.

He said they should consider the evidence in an impartial and detached manner and reach a verdict purely on the evidence before them and nothing else.

Mr Redmond denies receiving £10,000 from former Fianna Fáil Councillor Patrick Dunne between October 1985 and June 1989 in relation to the compulsory purchase by Dublin County Council of lands at Buzzardstown near Blanchardstown.
