The Green Party has been accused by Dublin City Council of engaging in highly dubious speculation about future waste policy that is not credible.
The comments came in the council's closing submission to an Environmental Protection Agency licensing hearing for its proposed incinerator at Poolbeg.
The council said a Green Party assumption that an alternative method for waste disposal, known as MBT, would be equal to thermal treatment was false.
Earlier Ciarán Cuffe TD had suggested that new technologies could mean there would not be enough residual waste to feed the Poolbeg plant.
Objectors were highly critical of an expert report on air quality, commissioned by the council, which was described as containing serious errors.
A report will now be submitted to the EPA for a decision on whether to license the facility, which has already been passed by An Bord Pleanála.
