A 20-year-old man who is accused of murder told gardaí he wanted to kill himself after stabbing his friend during a row in Irishtown in Dublin.

Mark Green of Tritonville Road in Sandymount denies murdering 19-year-old Alan Young on 11 March 2007.

A jury at the Central Criminal Court heard how Mark Green flagged down gardaí after the stabbing because he knew he had done something wrong and could not live with it.

Video recordings of Mr Green's interviews with gardaí were played in court today.

They showed how the accused broke down several times and said he did not believe he was capable of such an act.

He told gardaí that Mr Young had come at him with a punch and he had extended his arm holding the knife.

Afterwards he had walked towards the East Link Bridge and was thinking of killing himself.

He then decided to go to a garda station and tried to flag down a passing patrol car.

During interviews with gardaí the accused had cried as he asked if they thought his friend would be alright.

Mr Young died from a single stab wound to the heart.

The pair, who had been friends for most of their lives had had a disagreement earlier in the night during which Mark Green was assaulted a number of times by Mr Young.

The trial continues.
