New PSNI campaign to counter racism

The PSNI has launched a major campaign aimed at tackling the growing rates of race and hate crime in Northern Ireland.

The latest figures also reveal that the number of sectarian incidents is still high.

Just last weekend a Lithuanian man and his wife, who is eight months pregnant, only narrowly escaped injury when a petrol bomb was thrown though the front window of their home in Cookstown, Co Tyrone.

A car parked outside the house was also burnt out in what police believe was a racially motivated incident.

It was the latest in a rising spiral of racist attacks in Northern Ireland. In the past year there were 1,047 such incidents, an increase of 10% on the previous year.

And the PSNI suspects the situation may be even worse than it appears because many people affected by racist attacks are too afraid to report them to the authorities.

This new police advertising campaign aims to address that problem by creating a greater awareness amongst the public of race and hate crime, and by encouraging people to come forward to report such incidents.
