A man is recovering in hospital after being shot in the hand in Salthill, Galway.

The 21-year-old was delivering pizzas with two other men when the shooting occurred, at around 10pm last night.

The victim was sitting in a van on Whitestrand Avenue when the gunman approached and fired into the vehicle.

The gunman then fled the scene and the injured man was taken to University College Hospital Galway.

Gardaí arrested a man in the Rahoon area at around midnight.

A house was searched but the shotgun was not recovered.

The 42-year-old man is being held at Mill Street Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.
