Hundreds of people have attended the funeral of showband legend Brendan O'Brien, which took place in Cork today.

The chief mourners included his five children who placed his two favourite guitars on the altar flanking his coffin as the service began at St. Patrick's Church.

Two of his daughters, Aideen and Trish, sang during the ceremony that was attended by many friends from the showband days, including Brendan Bowyer, Gina of Gina, Dale Hayes & the Champions and former Dixie bandmembers including Joe Mac and Stevie Lynch.

The funeral cortege stopped briefly in front of the site of the famous Arcadia Ballroom where thousands flocked in the 1960s to hear Brendan O'Brien and the Dixies.

The band achieved their biggest hit in 1968 when Little Arrows stayed at Number 1 in the Irish charts for 20 weeks.

Mr O'Brien is survived by his five children, Brendan, Conor, Trish, Aideen and Sinead, who all live in Canada.

The 66-year-old died unexpectantly at his home in Blackpool last Thursday.

It is understood he suffered a heart attack.
