Funeral - Father and son buried in Moyvane

The funerals of Michael and Denis Hanrahan have taken place in Moyvane in Co Kerry.

The father and son were shot dead at their home near the village a week ago.

Several hundred attended the funeral Mass at the Church of the Assumption, which was concelebrated by around a dozen priests.

The chief celebrant at the Mass said their deaths had left people numbed, perplexed and angry.

Fr Sean Horgan, a relative of the family, described the deaths as violent and reprehensible.

Members of the Hanrahan family, including Michael Hanrahan's children Shane, Kayrena, Marion and Áine, were among the congregation.

Michael and Denis Hanrahan were buried at the local Murhur cemetery.

Earlier, 30-year-old Thomas Barrett of Cleandries, Causeway, Co Kerry, was brought before Listowel District Court charged with murdering Michael and Denis Hanrahan.

Judge Mary O'Halloran directed that he receive whatever psychiatric and medical care he requires at Cork Prison, amid concern among his family for his well-being.

Judge O'Halloran remanded Thomas Barrett in custody for a week on the application of Garda Inspector Joe Moore.
