A jury at an inquest into the death of a student who died after he was held in garda custody has returned a verdict of death by misadventure.

29-year-old Steven Sheridan from Phibsborough in Dublin was initially taken to hospital after he was found ill in his college room at NUI Maynooth.

Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis told the inquest a post mortem had revealed that Mr Sheridan had ecstasy, methadone and two anti-depressants in his system.

He said the cause of death was by drug intoxication.

The jury recommended that the gardaí review their procedures to monitor those in garda custody who had medical problems.

Mr Sheridan had initially been taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in a critical condition but he discharged himself that night.

He was arrested by gardaí when he returned to his room in Maynooth where a quantity of drugs had been found.

He was held overnight at Naas Garda Station, but was rushed to hospital at 5am when gardaí could not wake him. He was pronounced dead at Naas General Hospital.

Earlier, his father Patrick told the inquest that he formally identified his son.

However, he said no member of Steven's family knew he was ill, even though he had been taken to hospital the day before.

A member of the medical staff who attended him said while they always encourage patients to contact their families, they cannot insist on it.

The Coroner said the Sheridan family had raised legitimate questions about informing next of kin.
