New figures show 72% of all personal injury claims last year related to motor accidents.
Over 7,800 such claims were processed by the Personal Injuries Assessment Board in 2007.
Since it was set up in 2004, the PIAB has been dealing with personal injury claims, providing a faster and more cost effective alternative to the courts.
The latest analysis of motor liability awards shows that in 2007 women accounted for 53% of claimants; motorists aged between 25 and 44 received almost half of all compensation awards for accidents, and the average amount handed out was €21,700.
Over three quarters of claimants cited multiple or neck, back and whiplash injuries. Injuries in the pelvis/leg/foot category generated the highest compensation payment at €28,500.
Dublin recorded the highest overall percentage of awards with almost a quarter of the national total. Counties Leitrim and Carlow had the lowest - just 0.79%.
